A Blogger site makes its transition to WordPress

I recently purchased a medium sized blog created in Blogger with content relevant to my destination marketing business. The Blogger (blogspot) blog itself was not really of interest to me, but its content had potential as a means to quick-start a larger, more commercial travel site.

I noticed the blog was for sale some time last year and the amount of relevant content it held in regards to Baja Mexico was inspiring. I recently purchased the blog plus a travel guide I will soon be publishing online.

My original idea was to extract the content, re-edit and integrate parts of it into a new travel website powered by WordPress. As I sat in front of my computer I realized the extraction would be a long and tedious task.

I began to research how to import Blogger into WordPress and was surprised to discover the numerous posts on the subject. I picked a couple of posts and on a lazy Sunday afternoon began to play with the process.

I first created a subdomain and directory in my hosting account that would serve as a testing ground for the import. I installed WordPress, picked a funky template from a third party and loaded up the empty site.

What came next was amazing. I followed the online guides I had found about importing Blogger into WordPress, went into the admin area, hit the import tab, selected Blogger and Oila! The magic began. Very cool.

Now there are a few steps missing here. For instance, you may want to first back up your old Blogger blog and save your template for importation into WordPress (if you like it). This is something that didn’t interest me.

I should also mention that when you do this you’ll lose all the Google juice the site has accumulated in Blogger, although there are ways to save it and use redirects. Follow the steps in the tutorials. You’ll find it’s fairly easy.

In my case, I had no interest in the old Blogger template and it came with a restricted URL – (name).blogspot.com so redirects were not that appealing to me. The site has also been idle for a few months.

In the end, I was able to import a Blogger blog into WordPress version 2.0+ thanks to its handy-dandy import utility. The whole thing was fun and easy, not to mention it saved me hours if not days of hard work!

Right now I’m in the process of cleaning up my new blog, adding images and playing with the overall design. My next step will be picking from a list of domains I own the proper name to use for the new site, and begin recruiting new authors.

Until then, I leave you with this interesting tale. Feel free to post your comments regarding this subject.
