Downturn or no Downturn

What a great industry this is. Regardless of what line of work you’re in -whether you’re a full time domainer or not- there is definitely plenty of opportunity in the domain industry (still) for those of us who choose to dabble in it.

As you get to know me better in the months to come you will hear a lot about how I’ve been involved in advertising for more than a decade. Just a little over five years ago, I was drawn in by domain names without knowing anything about them or who the big players in the game were. They called to me and I started to invest. To me it just made sense. Being in advertising you can’t beat some of the great online space you can acquire here on the cheap.

Downturn or no downturn, I can’t complain. Whenever I can I read up on the blog posts and in the last few months I’ve noticed a lot of negativity out there. Hey, as a fairly new guy learning along the way I can’t say I’ve had it that bad here. Especially when I didn’t quite know what to expect in the long run.

Let’s face it, times are tough. But where else can you really make your money back 100 fold or more? Where else can you make an $8 investment to buy a piece of property and before you know it, you turn that around without looking for $800 bucks or more?

Many of us see the large sales and those are great. They are, in all truthfulness, what has brought many of us to the table. But in the short time I’ve been involved in domaining I’ve come to realize that the real meat and bones of this business is in the day to day short sales. I’m talking about those three to four digit sales that keep you in the game.

So with that said, it is hard for me to read some of the stuff that’s out there downplaying the current state of the market. Let’s be realistic, if you spend $8 bucks one day and the next day somebody hands you over a $100 bill for that same investment, would you turn that down under normal circumstances? Just keeping it real.
